Santa Cruz de La Palma
Santa Cruz de La Palma
Santa Cruz de La Palma is the capital of the island and is situated on the east coast. The name is sometimes written S/C de La Palma, or just Santa Cruz. On the island it is sometimes, confusingly, referred to as La Palma.
Some of the Santa Cruz's narrow streets are traffic-free. Weekday afternoons (between 13.00
and 17.00), Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday the shops are closed and the streets are
quiet. Many of the old shops have wooden doors and shutters so window-shopping is limited at
these times.
During the carnival event "Los Indianos" people go into the narrow main street of the old
town. Note the clothes. The event has its roots in the return of Palmero emigrants from
Cuba, hence the white tropcal hats, suits, dresses and slaves - the latter usually being
portrayed by men dressed up and painted black.
The morning sun shines on the old and new white-painted houses and contrasts sharply with
the dark clouds above. Dark cloud does not mean 'cold and rainy' on La Palma. It just means
that there is a cloud hanging against the hills above! On the day this photograph was taken
the temperature was around 18°C and it didn't rain in Santa Cruz.
A view of the specially made performance area. The "stage" is in the open air and is part of
the harbour car park (center right) with public stands on three sides. There are huge queues of ticketholders on the roadside, and another queue (out of picture)
to the right. The small brightly lit area on the extreme left of the picture - in the park -
is an open air outside broadcast television studio.
Wooden balconies in Calle O'Daly, Santa Cruz. The are made of tea (pron. Tay-a) which is the central, resin rich, center of the Canary
Pine.
During festivals the Town Hall of Santa Cruz is decorated with richly embroidered cloth.
A quick look in some of the old buildings can be rewarded with murals such as these in Santa
Cruz.
Santa Cruz, at the northern edge of the boulevard there is a place where waves can splash over the wall
when there is a strong wind is from the east. If there are empty parking places and the road is wet ..... you have been warned.!
