Tourist Information - Ottawa

The city of Ottawa in the province of Ontario is the capital of Canada. Ottawa is a major centre for tourism. It is located in the south-eastern part of the province of Ontario. Nestled on the banks of the Ottawa and Rideau Rivers, approximately 200 kilometres west of Montreal and 400 kilometres northeast of Toronto, the City of Ottawa has a rich culture heritage. Since its founding in 1826, Ottawa has seen a number of changes to the municipal government. From the days when local municipalities governed their own territories, to the creation of Regional Government in 1969, to today's one-tier municipal government, Ottawa has evolved with the times. On January 1, 2001, the new City of Ottawa was created with the amalgamation of the Region of Ottawa-Carleton and 11 local municipalities: Cumberland, Gloucester, Goulbourn, Kanata, Nepean, Osgoode, Ottawa, Rideau, Rockcliffe Park, Vanier, and West Carleton.

Ottawa has been described as one of the most beautiful capital cities in the world. Under one hour's drive from the American border, Ottawa has big city attractions whilst enjoying the attributes of a major centre for the visual and performing arts. However, it still maintains the accessibility, atmosphere and charm of a smaller city. Additionally there is access to parks and wilderness areas within and around the city areas.
